Plastics are the polyvinyl monomers made up of chains of molecules or the repeating units of molecules. Organic polymers contain a long chain of carbon and hydrogen compounds. The best examples include polyethylene terephthalate – PET or PETE and Polyvinyl chloride – PVC.Different types of plastics are formed by proper molding and shaping after subjecting them to high temperatures. Based on the chemical nature they are grouped under 2 categories: – linear polymers and hetero polymers. Linear polymers mostly have aliphatic carbon chain such as propylene wherein the methyl group is attached to every carbon atom. Hetero Polymers can be defined as the polymer chains with carbon chain and atoms such as oxygen, sulphur and nitrogen.
Apart from its advantages plastics do have an adverse effect on environment too. The main chemical component present in plastic is Bisphenol A which is believed to be a strong chemical that damages the mankind. Recent studies reveal that people who consume food through plastic plates are more prone to kidney related diseases soon than the normal ones. In addition to it, it also damages the digestive tract of innocent animals like cattle and also marine organisms. Long term exposure of plastic disposals destroys the surrounding atmosphere.Tags: Bisphenol, Plastics
